Once I want to try some recipe which I have seen in the net. For that recipe corn flour is one of the ingredients. So I bought one full pack from the Indian grocery. For long time I don’t know how to finish that flour. So asusal I started searching for some recipes which use corn flour as the main ingredient. I came across “Makki Ki roti ” ( chappathi/roti made by mixing wheat flour and corn flour) which is North Indian recipe. Suddenly I remembered what my grandma said in my childhood days. I always make comments when my grandma makes dosa because she will make thick dosa’s like uthappam . That time she used to say that she is very good in making dosa’s and she used to make dosa made of corn batter for big family (I mean the family members count). She used to tell that in those days (40 yrs back) they used to soak corn and grind and make batter for dosa as we are doing with rice now. This gave me the idea why I should not make dosa with this corn flour. I tried out . It was very good and tasty.
Ingredients
-
Idli batter – 1 cup
-
cornflour – 2cups
-
little salt and water
Preparation
Mix all the ingredients well and make Dosa. Eat with hot chutney’s like onion chutney which is the best combination.
Other Varieties
-
If you mix wheat flour instead of corn flour that becomes “WHEAT DOSA” or Gothumai Dosai. This is good for people having diabetes.
-
If you mix Ragi flour instead of corn flour that becomes “RAGI DOSA”
-
If you mix Maida flour instead of corn flour that becomes “MAIDA DOSA”
-
If you mix kambu flour instead of corn flour that becomes “KAMBU DOSA”
-
You can also make these dosa’s with out adding idli batter. You feel little bit sticky . To avoid that add idli batter.

We all know this simplest question Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? Usually we ladies atleast me don’t bother . Which ever comes first to my hand either chiken or egg the next is you will get a recipe with it. Here we are going to see how to make egg poriyal which is slightly different from the normal (not much diference). Why I am showing this difference is I don’t want to make the egg into fine pieces because for feeding kid it will be difficult. If you give poriyal along kids sometimes won’t eat. If you mix rice and give again they will say no for sometimes. Atleast this is waht my kids does. So I found this way. If we make poriyal like this both adults and kids an eat well.
Egg Poriyal
Ingredient
- Egg -3
- One medium size Onion chopped
- Half Tomato hopped
- Green chillies finely chopped-1 (for kids avoid)
- Mustard seed -1/4 tsp
- salt
- Turmeric powder – little
- Chilli powder -1/4 tsp
- Oil
- Curry ,corriander leaves little
Preparation
- Take a bowl and beat the egg with pinch of salt and turmeric powder. (Itz good to add turmeric in all forms of non-veg)
- Heat the nonstick pan . Pour the beaten egg into it and cook by tossing the pan so that egg will roll and form like small small balls. Once it is done keep it seperately.
- Now heat the pan. Pour the oil. Splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add onion ,chilli, tomato ,pinch of turmeric powder, salt and let it cook so that it forms a thich gravy (thokku type).
- Finally add the cooked egg into it and mix well. Egg /muttai poriyal is ready
Hi,
If your kid is 2+ she may like this plain pasta. Plain Pasta is , cook elbow shaped ( letter- c) pasta with pinch of salt in water. If it is cooked fully drain the excess water and you can give this as a snack to your kid. I won’t be tastier but my kid likes this a lot. Hope that taste can only be realised by the kids and not the adults.
When to start Solids?
In India my doctor told me to start solids like ceralac after 110 days. So what I did was after 110 days I started with biscuits. I used to take one Milk biscuit (like Milk bikis, Parlie G) . Put that in 10 ml of milk and let it dissolve completely. Then with a help of spoon feed you baby. Initially i used to give only once a day then after a week I started giving twice a day.
Four to Six months
- At 4thmonth I switched from biscuts to Ceralac. If you are in US then you can go with gerber baby foods. Till the end of 6thmonth try different varieties in it.
- After 6thmonth start some fresh fruits like banana. Mash fully in hand and then give little (a pinch). If you are not using Blender of mixer, itz well and good. Your child will learn to chew properly.
- If you get pufed poha/pori then put some puffed poha in front of your kid let he/she take it in hand and put inside the mouth. Its kid of exercise for hand and face(when baby chews).
- You can introduce some finger foods also.
- you can boil fruits like apple ,mash it and feed the baby.
- I always suggest you to give fresh foods and vegetables rather than going for gerber canned foods
- Give gerber oatmeal / Mixed grains powder once daily.
- If you can able to make sathumavu ( protienrich baby food on your own) give that daily or in alternate days. You can find sathumavu recipe in Kids recipe.
Seventhmonth
As the baby steps into 7th month you can try giving our foods.
How to cook rice
- Take one fist ( 10 ml ) of rice. Add same or little less of Toor Dhal and pinch of salt and pressure cook for 4 -5 whistles. So that it gets mashed completely. Take out the food mash with hand and feed your baby. Please don’t go for mixers to grind.Try this for 2 weeks .
- Slowly add one vegetable a day into the above preparation. Start with vegetables with have lots of water content in it like lachi etc so that itz fully cooked and blended with rice. ( what I saying is add rice,Dal, vegetable(little),pinch of salt and then cook). You can use vegetables carrot, beans, potato, sweet potato etc.Try the above for two weeks .
- Then you can mix dhals ,you can mix vegetables and so on. Continue this as one time food until 1 and half years. When more teeth’s have come. Slowly reduce the whistle count for cooking.
Tenth to 12th month
- you can just our egg in bowl add a pinch of salt and mix well. In tawa fry the egg by breaking into small pieces and feed you kid.
- At this stage your baby can eat one full baby banana as a one time food.
- At this stage slowly reduce the milk quantity.
- start giving fish. Try it if you baby likes give. Try with frozen since it won’t have bones in it.
- Start giving curd rice also.
- start giving rasam rice.
- Make your kid eat on his/her own some snacks like biscuits.

Whenever I feel bored I used to browse some cooking recipe sites or some cooking vedio’s. I saw this recipe in sun TV. I tried out and came good. Itz not a tome consuming process. Ingredients are simple and protein rich dhals. It is a very simple dish made with ingredients that are readily available and has no complex flavors. It is a dish that we fall back on when we want a quick simple and nutritious meal but at the same time lazy to do much prep work. This is a rice lentil combo dish which forms a meal by itself. This healthy and tasty dish can be served with vegetables and/or crispies. This is coimbatore side recipe. You can say this as Milagu rice or Ghee rice also.
Agriculture was the predominant occupation of people in and around coimbatore, pollachi, tirupur etc., That demands daylong toiling in the fields , its like doing a complete workout at a gym!! So when people came back home in the eve all they need is a warm bath and some yummy for the worked out tummy….now no matter how tired they are , the mothers always ensured that their families are well cared for with a heartiful meal . So what do they do?? not a 2 minute noodle…but they make arisi-paruppu sadham!!It could be done in a jiffy and still was wholesome in itself. The name says it all , arisi (rice)-paruppu(lentil) sadham…..its a balanced diet with rice, pulses , veggies and more importantly its lip-smacking good. So here is how we go about it.
Ingredients:
- Rice – 1 cup (small size rice is preferable like jeeraga samba, ponni, sonamasoori)
- Pattai /cinammon – 2
- kirambu /cloves -2
- Milagu / pepper corns- 5
- Toordhal – 1/4 cup
- Whole green moong dhal – 1/4 cup
For powder
- corriander seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Redchilli -3
- Milaagu/ Pepper corns – 5
- jeera -1/4 tsp
- sombu – 1/4 tsp
For garnishing
- Cashewnuts -10
- Raisins – 10
- Ghee – 3 tsp
Preparation:
- Wash rice and soak in water for 10 mins.
- In the mean time , fry all the ingredients under Powder with out adding oil and make dry powder.
- keep pressure cooker on stove. Pour 2 tsp of ghee. Add pattai, kirambu and milagu fry it. Add little water and bring it to boil. Then add the dry powder into the boiling water let all boil together.
- Now add the dhals, salt and 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
- Once itz cooled open add the rice and add salt if needed and add 2 more cups of water and cook for 3 whistles.
- Fry Cashewnuts and raisins in ghee and add to rice and mix well. The consistency should be like pongal consistency.
Tips:
We are cooking dhals first to make it well cooked so that it will belnd with rice. Instead of this you can soak dhals for minimum of half an hour so that you can add rice and dhal together for cooking. Since itz soaked it will get cooked soon.
